Boating is just about the largest marine pastime that can offer experiences ranging from relaxing to exhilarating, and anywhere in between.
Nearly 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. went boating last year. There is a large array of things you can do on the water. You can relax doing some fishing, take a leisurely cruise, or just relax with friends and family, spending some quality time together. Just being on a boat out on the water away from everything is very relaxing.
For more excitement you can water ski, wakeboard, or try a variety of towable inflatables.
If you don’t have a boat, you could buy or rent one, but you will need to know what type of boating you want to do. There are more than 30 types of boats from small inflatables to motor yachts.
If fishing is one of the pastimes you would like to do on your choice of a boat, that will only narrow the field a little as the majority of boat types can be used for fishing, but if it is to be a primary use of the boat, then you will probably want to look at an all purpose fishing boat or maybe a bass boat or center console.
If money permits, a walkaround or a sportfishing boat may be what you are looking for, especially if you want to do offshore fishing.
If you’re interested in cruising around, enjoying the scenery or stopping off at a beach for a little swimming or even a barbeque, then a small sport boat or bowrider would be good.
If you want a protected area, you might want to consider a cuddy cabin. These boats have a small cabin that you can even use for small groups for overnighters.
There are runabouts, ski boats, deck boats, bowriders even some of the larger inflatables that are great for water skiing or for pulling wakeboards and inflatable toys.
The larger boats like the inboard cruisers, motor yachts, and multi-hull cruisers are good for living aboard, or using them as vacation homes on the water. That brings up the houseboat.
These are good for living on a lake, river, or on coastal waters. They have more room than a typical boat, and are designed for living onboard, and have all the modern amenities, they are a home on the water, which can be easily relocated.
We can’t forget the personal watercraft, designed for one person, or sometimes two.
This watercraft is popular in lakes, rivers, and around beaches. It is the marine version of the motorcycle.
There are also several types of sailboats from the dinghy sailboat, built for one or two, and good for learning how to sail, to the cruising sailboat, which is the live aboard vacation home sailboat, complete with sleeping, cooking, and plumbing facilities.
They normally have an auxiliary power generator and a diesel engine for cruising when the winds are not blowing.
One more style of boat is the airboat, good for shallow water and marshes, where normal styles of boats can’t go. These boats have flat bottoms and are propelled by aircraft propellers, driven by either aircraft or automobile engines.
